IF YOU ARE ALREADY A PERMANENT RESIDENT IN PORTUGAL

The nationals of the United Kingdom, and their relatives, keep the right of residence in Portugal, with the same rights and obligations currently applicable. For now, new actions are no longer necessary, in addition to the administrative formalities provided in the regime currently in force.

If your permanent residence certificate has expired, you must renew it within the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), by submitting supporting documents certifying that, even after the end of validity, you have continued living in Portugal. For the issuing of the permanent residence card, the relatives of the nationals of the United Kingdom shall submit the documentation mentioned and a supporting proof of the family connection.

IF YOU’RE NOT A HOLDER OF A PERMANENT RESIDENT IN PORTUGAL YET

IF YOU HAVEN’T COMPLETED FIVE YEARS OF LEGAL RESIDENCE YET

In case you already hold a certificate of registration, but not five years of legal residence yet, you may continue living in Portugal, with the same rights and duties, and apply for the document of permanent residence at five years-old.

IF YOU’RE ALREADY A HOLDER OF A REGISTRY FOR FIVE YEARS

In case you’re a holder of a certificate of registry for five years, you should apply within SEF the issuing of a document of permanent residence, by proving the continuity of residence with any means of proof admissible.

IF YOU HAVEN’T REGISTERED YET

If you live in Portugal for less than five years, but has never registered as a resident, it is advisable to register your residence within the City Hall of your area of residence.

However, if you live in Portugal for more than 5 years and has never registered, you may submit, within SEF, an application for a document of permanent residence. For such, you must submit supporting documents in which you are living in Portugal for more than five consecutive years, complying, therefore, with Law 37/2006 for such period, have been a subordinate worker or self-employed or have had means of subsistence.

The nationals from the United Kingdom arriving to Portugal until the end of the transitional period, and wish to continue, shall register within the City Hall of their area of residence.
